Media creation for games is one of my favourite courses to have done.

For the duration of this University module, I was introduced to the software and methodologies used by artists for the purpose of creating appealing and memorable game pieces.

I had previously only done material sculptures out of clay and had cast them from moulds.

To create a digital sculpture felt like a challenge.

Of the software I used among which were Maya, 3DsMax, ZBrush and Photoshop, I favoured Blender right away. There is something quite appealing to me in the fact that free software can empower any individual to bring a vision into a 3D digital reality.

While I admit to the fact that Photoshop and ZBrush have their advantages in regard to capabilities, Blender seemed like an All-In-One kind of environment where one can experiment with the seemingly infinite features. Anything from modelling down to animating, and I was charmed.

Yet, first attempts at sculpting and 3D modelling were gruelling. I had never touched software like this and all the ways in which I would approach the creation of an object seemed a tad irrelevant.

Over time I got to complete different objectives set by my lecturer and learned a lot about the process. From a fine art point of view I truly enjoyed the conceptualisation of a character and them being brought to life. I appreciated the necessity of mastering both physical and digital mediums. I drew out sketches both by hand and in Photoshop and then used those references to create different things.

At this time I am deeply appreciative of the true mastery of craft, patience and attention to detail to create characters like Elle from “The Last of Us” published by Naughty Dog, or even things like glass trinkets, baskets of apples (which look like apples rather than tomatoes!) or creatures like the ones found in “The Witcher” games by CD Projekt Red.

Media creation for games is now one of my favourite things to do for a game. I love imagination and if the game itself is the “book”, the modelling of the world in which the story takes place, is that perfect moment of translated imagination.
